When a negative thought or negative habitual reaction comes up

When a negative thought or negative habitual reaction comes up, I try to recognize it. Immediately I tell myself, “that Barry, the one having the negative thought, does not exist.” I analyze like this, is that Barry the same or different from my aggregates (my body and mind). If they are identical, there are contradictions — one and many. There is one Barry but many aggregates. If they are unrelatedly different, I cannot say, “my leg hurts.” Actions (karma) and their consequences would have no connection. There is no third alternative. Applying this approach every day for months and years, slowly I become convinced, “Barry (the one appearing to exist on its own) does not exist. Please light a candle or lamp today remembering those who sacrificed their lives at Tiananmen Square in 1989.
