Compassion is like medicine. When you are not sick, you don’t need medicine. But when you are sick, you need it. The same with compassion. Of course, you need it all the time, but when life is smooth and going well, compassion is less needed. When you face difficulties, compassion is very much needed. Compassion is a refuge. It protects us from getting angry. When we become frustrated and upset, anger is just around the corner. Remembering and practicing compassion smooths out difficulties without suppressing them. It acts as a rocket launcher to propel us into the space of tolerance and compassion. It is win-win, helping others, as well as ourself. Learn to identify your early anger. When you recognize it, imagine it becomes a cloud, drifting across the sky, that dissolves along with your early anger. Practice this again and again.
