We try to live in the world, but not be of the world. To be in the world works best when we are motivated by love and compassion. To not be of the world is to recognize that appearances are false. They are like illusions. Like an image in a dream when we wake up. To become attached to dream images is foolish and it gets us into so much trouble. It artificially and conceptually divides people into US and THEM. Attachment to in-group and aversion to out-group follow with anger, jealousy, pride, and even national conflicts. So, we live in the world with love, but not of the world by staying unattached to false appearances.
