Practicing to be a Bodhisattva is honoring, respecting, and serving all sentient beings. We wish, and act to guide all of them to enlightenment. The worldly way of acting with others is to respond in kind. If the other person treats us poorly, we respond poorly to them. If the other person is kind, we respond with kindness. A Bodhisattva treats everyone with kindness and love, no matter how they treat us. Difficult people remind us not to react with anger and jealousy, rather with kindness and love. At our beginner stage, we need to protect ourself in face of potential harm. As our wisdom and compassion grow, we will respond to everyone with kindness and love, regardless of how they treat us.
