The most important benefit of patience consists in the way it acts as a powerful antidote to the affliction of anger – the greatest threat to our inner peace, and therefore our happiness. After the recent terrorist attacks in Brussels we all feel devastated and demoralized. Nevertheless, our mind, or spirit, is not physical, thus it cannot be touched or harmed directly. Only negative thoughts and emotions can harm it. Therefore, only the corresponding positive mental quality, such as patience, compassion, or wisdom, can protect it, even when such atrocities occur. Of course we do not sit idle. We must act to protect us all, but not out of violence and anger. This is engaged, powerful and courage compassion.
