Some people consider warm-hearted kindness to be a sign of weakness; limp like an overcooked eggplant. Actually compassion is active, countering injustice. Compassion counters our tendency to think we are the best, or to think we are the worst. Love and compassion reduce our self-centeredness. They reduce our ego by putting our energy into concern for others. So practicing compassion takes courage – the courage to face and work on reducing our own selfishness.
