When we encounter a rough patch and are come down hard on our self, remember others, many of whom are also being harm on themselves. Wish them all to be free of shame and self-ridicule. “Them” including myself. Send light and love to all, including myself. Shifting the focus away from “me, me, me” often lifts our mood, and eases the self bashing. It may even open our heart and bring joy.
