Dharmakīrti was a scholar in the 6th/7th century at Nālandā monastic university. In his classic book, ‘Valid Cognition’, his said, “once there is a self, there is the idea of other. Due to self and other, there is attachment and hostility, and all the ensuing problems.” This “Us and Them” attitude has gotten out of hand leading to abuse, corruption, violence, environmental destruction, gross income inequality, etc. Compassion is neglected. Others are neglected. Egotism takes over. In addition to reforming institutions, it is vital that we reform and reign in our ego. Others are more important, in that there are so many “others” and only one me. Enjoy the amazing photo of HH by my dear friend, Rato Khenpo Nicky Vreeland.
