True education is all about maturing a child into a happy child and happy adult. Knowledge is only part of it. Without an ethical foundation, a compassionate moral compass, we can easily go astray. Some highly educated people have been terrorists torturing and killing many. And far too many have been led by the nose of greed. Ancient Indian traditions of ‘karuna’ (compassion) and ‘ahimsa’ (nonviolence) are lacking in modern education. These are crucial for creating a happy person with a warm heart. Based on inner compassion (karuna) — concern for the welfare of others — we restrain (ahimsa) violent tendencies, and transform them into love and compassion.
